Walking in the Light and Social Justice

The effect of having the light of God in our lives becomes overwhelmingly visible. His light is the life of Christ which could not be overcame by the darkness (John 1:4). Just as it is impossible to hide a candle in a dark room, so the life of Christ seeps into every thing around it. The effect of light is all that is good and right and true (Ephesians 5:9), influencing and changing the world for the better.

So Jesus said to them, “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going (John 12:35 ESV).

While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” (John 12:36 ESV).

the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned.” (Matthew 4:16 ESV).

to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.” (Luke 1:79 ESV).

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12 ESV).

and if you are sure that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness… (Romans 2:19 ESV).

The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light (Romans 13:12 ESV).

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all (1 John 1:5 ESV).

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light (1 Peter 2:9 ESV).

Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but when it is bad, your body is full of darkness (Luke 11:34 ESV).

Walk in light, follow light recognise the light and live the light…

As a believer and follower of The Lord Jesus Christ one cannot be, but involved with Social Justice. Being a Christ follower impels us to be an advocate of and at times also take an active stand for Social Justice.

True religion is to visit the sick and care for the orphans… (James 1:27).

I believe that as people are walking in their calling some will be impelled to immerse themselves as actively as possible in the fight for Social Justice, thereby becoming to some extent activists in the specific area they believe they are called to. Other believers may not be as actively involved in Social Justice but they nevertheless should have opened ears and hearts to know and recognise when there is an out cry for Social Justice. Consequently, they should respond appropriately to the outcry as they are instructed by God and His Word. We therefore only need to walk in the light.
